To rule out any irregularity, NMC asks medical colleges to submit admission details

NEW DELHI: In a bid to rule out any irregularities in MBBS admissions, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed all medical colleges to verify and submit details of all students enrolled for the academic year 2024 -25.
This includes Admitted Student Entrance Examination (NEET) Roll Number, Marks Obtained in 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Merit Number, Date of Birth, Subcategory ( SC/ST/unqualified) and the fees charged to them. annually among others.
Officials said this has been done to ensure that all MBBS admissions are strictly on merit and do not exceed the sanctioned admission capacity. “Earlier, the deadline for submitting the details was November 8, but many colleges have not filled or partially filled the required information. Thus, we have given the deadline of November 23 to medical colleges to submit the information required,” B Srinivas, secretary, NMC told TOI.
Last year, NMC conducted an informal exercise to check that MBBS admissions conducted by colleges were in compliance with regulations. It was found that there were cases, at least 30-40 of them, where the admission was not as per the rules. For example, according to sources, students who secured less than 50% marks in 10+2 (physics, chemistry, biology) were admitted.
The NMC secretary said that they have, for the first time, developed an online monitoring system to ensure faithful adherence to admission norms and further promote transparency and accountability in medical education. There are around 1.20 lakh undergraduate medical seats in government and private medical colleges across the country.
Srinivas said that while granting admission to MBBS courses, medical colleges are required to ensure that this does not exceed their permissible admission capacity. Additionally, colleges must ensure that students meet eligibility requirements regarding age and qualifying grades.
All students admitted to MBBS course are expected to have qualified NEET-UG with required percentile; 50th percentile and above for general category, 45th percentile and above for physically challenged and 40th percentile and above for reserved (SC/ST/OBC) candidates.
In addition to this, all admissions must be done through common counseling. “Any violation will result in dismissal of students from the MBBS program and action against the medical college concerned, as permitted by law,” said a circular issued by the NMC.
