49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will remain in Santa Clara this week, working to return from bilateral Achilles tendinitis.

The 49ers expect him to return to practice next week after the team’s bye week and, if all goes well, he will return to the lineup in Week 10.

“We hope it goes that way,” coach Kyle Shanahan told KNBR on Tuesday, via 49erswebzone.com. “It was trending this wayand this has been going on since we stopped it and took these very slow steps. It’s getting there. He hasn’t had any setbacks and hopefully he has a really good week and we can get him training next week, which obviously would be huge for us.

McCaffrey did not play this season and went on injured reserve on September 14.

Once the 49ers open McCaffrey’s practice window, they have 21 days to activate him to the active roster. Otherwise, he will return to IR for the remainder of the season.
