(WNDU) – Don’t be surprised if you see more police on the roads during the Thanksgiving holiday.

It’s all part of the ISP’s “Safe Family Travel Campaign.” It begins Saturday in anticipation of families celebrating Turkey Day early.

The Indiana State Police launches this campaign each holiday season to encourage safe driving practices. This helps keep an eye on the all-too-common drunk driving that occurs the day before Thanksgiving, or “blackout Wednesday.”

“Drunk driving accidents, drunk driving arrests, I always like to say those are 100% preventable because you just have to make the smart choice not to take driving if you’ve been drinking,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner.

If you plan to drink, make sure you have a designated driver or use rideshare to ensure you and everyone else on the road stays safe this holiday season.
