Georgetown rezoning sparks community concerns

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Jacksonville City Council is holding a public hearing on the Georgetown Landing project and citizens are raising concerns about the possible rezoning of properties in the community.

The developers want to change how the property is rezoned. It is also possible that a marina will be built. Georgetown Preservation Society President Rev. Leander Milton said he is concerned about the future of his community.

“Right now our roads can’t even accommodate the people we have here. So deteriorated. We need help with roads, lighting and all those things,” Milton said.

According to the city, a simple rezoning does not increase property taxes.

“The infrastructure simply cannot handle that many people. Plus, if you’re allowed to rebuild, property taxes will go up so much that residents here will be forced to leave,” Milton said. “And that’s why we’re trying to prohibit them from forcing residents of this community to leave this community.”
