American voters are on the way to the polls Tuesday to decide between presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, with a highly anticipated result in Europe.

Polls showing the two candidates in a tight race, seven Swing States should determine the outcome of the elections.

Several safe states are already claimed for both candidates. The first were Indiana and Kentucky, both called for Trump, and Vermont, for Harris.

Tens of millions of American citizens had already voted at the start of the vote. Their collective decision could transform United States relations with Europeparticularly regarding the future of aid to Ukraine, NATO and transatlantic trade.

Some in Europe expect that although a Harris administration would essentially be a continuation of the status quoa second Trump administration would be more protectionist and less invested in the security of its allies – what the former president calls his “America First” agenda.

Tuesday’s elections will also decide who controls both houses of the US Congress, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

There are 34 Senate seats up for grabs, with Democrats hoping to maintain their slim majority there. Republicans have already won a Senate seat in West Virginia, which was vacated by Democrat-turned-independent Joe Manchin. The safe Republican state has already been claimed for Donald Trump.

All 435 seats in the Republican-led House of Representatives are also up for grabs. Trump’s party has only the slimmest of majorities, and Democrats hope to flip the House their way.

Abroad, there has been less focus on the House and Senate elections, with all eyes on Harris and Trump, but the makeup of Congress will have a huge impact on the next presidency, whoever wins. who will end up in the Oval Office.

Americans also vote on statewide ballot initiatives on issues like abortion access or marijuana legalization.
