Tazewell High School Class of 1973 Continues Legacy with Documentary and Foundation

TAZEWELL, Va. (WVVA) – The Tazewell High School Class of 1973 celebrated its 50th class reunion last year by telling the stories of its classmates on video, because throughout five decades, classmates have felt a feeling of unity and togetherness.

Next year, PBS viewers will be able to share some of their stories.

“So that was born the desire to recognize where we come from, because we feel very strongly that who we are is a result of our heritage,” David Whittaker, Tazewell Class of ’73 Peak President Foundation.

With the Class of 1873, the Peak Foundation was established to assist members of the community and to recognize that Tazewell High School opened in 1873, making it the centennial class.

“We were the centennial class. So now we can take that legacy and carry it forward as the Centennial Class celebrates the top of the foundation,” said classmate Terry W. Mullins.

Working tirelessly, one graduate decided to travel nearly 5,000 miles to collect the successes of her classmates. After gathering stories, Debra Wilson created a documentary featuring most of the class of 1973.

“I captured these stories. I was even more intrigued by the legacy we truly had to leave for our community, future classes and our county,” said Debra Wilson.

The Tazewell Class of ’73 Peak Foundation plans to continue to grow and invest in the community’s future.
