Rochester Hills man seriously injured by illegal Columbia resident in crash

A 72-year-old man was seriously injured after being struck by a car driven by an illegal immigrant while crossing a road in Rochester Hills.

The victim was struck around 6:45 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Rochester and Avon roads. The suspect is a 28-year-old Colombian who entered the country illegally.

The Columbia resident was driving a 2013 Ford Focus and heading north on Rochester Road while the pedestrian was walking west on Avon Road.

The Rochester Hills man was then struck while crossing Rochester Road – although he was wearing a reflective vest at the time and investigators believe he was in a marked crosswalk when he been hit.

He was taken to the hospital by the Rochester Hills Fire Department.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are investigating this case, which determined that the driver of the vehicle entered the United States illegally.

The suspect was released pending a future court date in federal court.

Investigators say speed and alcohol or drug use appear to be factors in the incident.
