Rep. Dan Goldman slams Pete Hegseth as Trump’s defense pick

representative Dan Goldman (New York Democrat) said he was “shocked” and “very disturbed” by the news that President-elect Donald Trump intends to name Fox News host Pete Hegseth to be his Secretary of Defense.

Asset announcement Tuesday evening, his plans to do the Fox and Friends Weekend co-host a member of his cabinet and sixth in the ranking presidential line of successioncomplimenting Hegseth’s eight years on Fox News, New York Times bestselling book and military service. Trump’s statement describes Hegseth as “an Army veteran of tours at Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan,” who “has been decorated with two Bronze Stars, as well as an Infantryman’s Badge of combat.”

CNN anchor Erin Burnett interviewed Goldman for his reaction to Trump’s Cabinet picks so far Tuesday evening. She had originally planned to discuss the South Dakota governor nomination. Kristi Noem For Homeland Security – Goldman serves on this House committee – before the Hegseth news broke.

Burnett joked that “ten minutes have passed, so the world has changed” and played a video of “longtime staunch Trump defender” Hegseth effusively praising Trump as “a president who said I want to make to America its greatness, and it stands.” against the left-wing forces who believe America was never great. She mentioned a report by The Wall Street Journal that Trump’s transition team was also considering an executive order that would create a “warrior council” that would have the power to remove three- and four-star military officers they deem “unfit for leadership.”

“What do you think?” she asked Goldman about Hegseth’s appointment.

His response:

I’m really shocked. And that’s exactly what we’ve been worried about and warned about about Donald Trump, which is that he’s going to appoint unqualified loyalists to make this government his own personal fiefdom, take revenge on the generals, and essentially put truly unqualified people – I like Mr. Hegseth in our armed forces, but being military does not make you qualified to run the Department of Defense and have access to our nuclear weapons.

This disturbs me greatly and I am very concerned about what this demonstrates about Donald Trump’s priorities, which now appear to be coming true, as many of us warned.

Burnett played a clip of Hegseth in 2019 talking about how “God used imperfect people” like Trump, but “what (Trump) resisted is unlike anything any other mortal could do “.

“Look, he’s a TV host, there’s going to be thousands of other things like this, but what do you hear when you hear this? she asked.

Goldman commented that the clip was “before January 6”, “before Donald Trump tried to overturn an election” and “before Donald Trump hid classified information in his bathroom and refused to return it despite he had telephone conversations with Vladimir Putin.”

“This guy is clearly a courtier of Donald Trump,” the congressman continued, “and has been his biggest cheerleader on Fox News, the biggest cheerleading network. And that’s not what makes one qualified to be a cabinet secretary or secretary of defense. And the fact that Donald Trump considers this appropriate is very dangerous for our national security.”

It was “bad enough” to have Noem, a governor who “has no border experience” at Homeland Security, Goldman said, but to have “a Fox News host who put his finger on guns nuclear weapons” was “very dangerous”. .”

Burnett then turned to the WSJ report on Trump’s intention to create a “warrior council.”

Goldman responded that he believed Hegseth “will clearly do whatever Donald Trump wants him to do” and that what Trump wanted was to “politicize the entire executive branch, the entire federal government.” He added that he still needed to look “a little more” at the draft executive order, but he feared it could result in Trump and Hegseth moving to “target” the generals who criticized Trump as John Kelly And Marc Milley.

“These are people who stood up as patriots for our country and who confronted and opposed Donald Trump, and this is what Donald Trump will do to get revenge and revenge on them,” Goldman said. “And Pete Hegseth is clearly the pawn in Trump’s plan to do just that.”
