Remains of WWII Air Force Staff Sgt. identified

The remains of a US Army Air Force Staff Sgt. from Sevastopol killed during the Second World War have been identified.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced Friday that the Sgt had been identified as 20-year-old Yuen Hop.

Hop’s family was recently informed because he was found in June.

DPAA states that in late 1944, Hop was assigned to the 368th Bombardment Squadron, 306th Bombardment Group, 1st Bombardment Division, 8th Air Force, in the European Theater.

Hop was missing in action on December 29 of that year while serving as a waist gunner aboard a B-17G “Flying Fortress.”

Hop’s plane was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire while flying a bombing mission in Bingen, Germany.

All crew members were able to exit the plane and one of them was found dead by German forces near the crash site.

Five men were captured and made prisoners of war (prisoners of war).

Hop and two other crew members were missing and there was no trace of them as prisoners of war.

Between May 2021 and August 2022, DPAA teams began excavations of a suspected burial site in Germany.

The DPAA discovered that possible remains and associated materials had been found.

DPAA scientists used anthropological analysis to identify Hop’s remains.

A rosette will be placed next to Hop’s name at the Lorraine cemetery in France to indicate that he has been found.
