New York area under red flag warning after nearly a month without rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) has released another Red flag warning for the New York area until 7 p.m. Saturday.

So far, the city has experienced 26 days without rain, creating a high risk of wildfires.

Authorities advise against outdoor burning and are wary of any activity that could start a fire.

Forest fire danger

As extremely dry conditions persist in the region, officials remain concerned that new forest fires that ignites could spread quickly.

Crews worked to put out several wildfires in the area on Friday, including a fire in Rockaway Township in Morris County.

Drought on the East Coast

“We need a little rain,” said FOX 5 NY meteorologist Liv Johnson. “If this dry spell continues, we could experience one of the driest months on record.”

Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently issued a drought alert, urging residents and businesses to conserve water as dry conditions persist.

In a press release, Officials said the state has experienced “significantly below average precipitation, which has contributed to decreased stream flows, reservoirs and groundwater levels” over the past three months.

What to do if you have a red flag warning according to the NWS

1. Refrain from burning outdoors: Stay away from fireplaces and grills.

2. Protective equipment: Store flammable materials safely.

3. Report fires immediately: Contact emergency services if you notice smoke or flames.

4. Stay up to date: Keep an eye on local weather reports for any changes in fire danger.

As dry conditions persist, community vigilance is essential.

City officials are actively monitoring the situation, hoping that rain would ease the drought and reduce fire risks.

Until then, New Yorkers are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared to stay safe during this critical time.
