New weather system to bring more snow to Northstate, travelers urged to prepare

The fast-moving system that crossed the North State on Veterans Day morning brought snowfall to Highway 299 in areas above 6,000 feet. Another slower weather system is expected to bring more snow Wednesday night into Thursday.

The National Weather Service predicts that Wednesday’s snowfall could be as low as 5,000 feet in elevation. The NWS also issued a winter storm warning for all of Siskiyou County from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

One of the best ways to prepare for traveling during the winter is to have an emergency kit in your vehicle and Josh Corona, Les Schwab Redding store manager, said the essential items in that kit should be flashlights, gloves, food and water.

Corona recommends that everyone travel with snow chains during the winter, whether the forecast calls for snow or not.

“We often see people get caught, they come from Oregon or Washington with no problem,” Corona said. “When it’s time to go home, a storm comes, and then they have to stop and get some chains to get ready to go home.”

Corona also said that there are traction devices for any vehicle on the road. He recommends the easy single-use sock, which he says has the same success rate as chains. The socks come in a pack of two and cover the tire. Corona also recommends traveling with chains, but the easy sock can be a quick alternative.

Anyone traveling can also prepare in advance by having their tire pressure and tread checked.
