Ritchie Torres slams far-left Democrats for Trump’s victory

A Democratic congressman from new York recently blamed progressives for President-elect Trump’s victory this week, arguing that far-left causes actually disenchant some voters.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., claimed his party had “alienated a historic number” of minority voters in an X (formerly Twitter) post Wednesday. Torres, a staunch supporter of Israel, pointed to pro-Palestinian protests as one of the causes – as well as the movement to defund the police.

“Donald Trump has no greater friend than the far left, which has succeeded in driving historic numbers of Latinos, blacks, Asians and Jews away from the Democratic Party with nonsense like ‘Defund the Police’ and ‘From the River to the Sea’ or ‘Latinx,'” Torres wrote.

“There is more to lose than to gain politically by leaning toward an extreme left that is more representative of Twitter, Twitch and TikTok than the real world,” added the Democrat. “The working class does not accept the ivory tower nonsense that the far left is peddling.”

Torres’ comments came in the wake of initial 2024 election results, which found that Vice President Harris had less favorability among Latino and Hispanic voters than President Biden did in 2020.

According to a Fox News voter analysis, Biden garnered 63% of Latino support in 2020, while Harris had just 54% this year.

Another analysis of Fox News voters found that support for Trump among Latino and Hispanic voters increased from 35% in 2020 to 41% in 2024.

This change occurred a few days after Trump campaign was criticized for hosting comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a high-profile rally on October 27 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The comedian made an incendiary joke about Puerto Rico being a “floating island of garbage,” sparking an outcry.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-CortezDN.Y., attempted to use Hinchliffe’s joke as an opportunity to influence the Latino community shortly after making the remark.

“That’s exactly what they think of you,” the congresswoman said during a Twitch stream. “That’s what they think of everyone who makes less money than them. That’s what they think of people who serve them food in a restaurant. That’s what they think of people folding their clothes in a store.”
