Family Y hoops tournament raises $1,500 for North Carolina hurricane survivors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Dozens of people in Hattiesburg took to the basketball courts at the Family YMCA of Southeast Mississippi on Saturday, to help survivors of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament was a fundraiser, so support the Blue Ridge Assembly YMCA near Asheville, North Carolina.

“We always thought the Y was one of the best Christian organizations, so we decided, ‘Hey, we’re going to come help them,'” said Ted Musgrove of Picayune, one of the tournament participants.

Matt Rumph, executive director of the Family YMCA of Southeast Mississippi, said Helene’s impact is still being felt.

“They lost about $26 million because of the hurricane,” Rumph said. “Right now, our delegation, our children, are organizing this tournament. It’s a fundraiser, and it all goes back to the Y/Blue Ridge Assembly.

About a dozen teams participated.

“(We do) anything to give back to help the people out there in North Carolina, so we have a good time giving back,” said Terrence Robinson, another Picayune tournament participant.

Rumph said about $1,500 was raised during the tournament.
