Victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina: Where is FEMA?

(NewsNation) — North Carolina Hurricane Helene the victims struggle and feel forgotten as winter approaches.

Temperatures are dropping and many hurricane survivors are living in tents or trailers without insulation.

More than 100,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina.

Hurricane victims in Swannanoa, North Carolina, told NewsNation’s Brian Entin that they lost everything and were “not getting any help.”

A woman who asked to be identified as Sarah, whose family now lives in a trailer, said her family had to pay $130 more per month for a portable toilet. Sarah hoped to receive disaster assistance from the government, only to be told that the funds were exhausted.

“We are already going through a very difficult time and not being able to get the financial help that we need is really horrible,” Sarah said.

President-elect Donald Trump criticized the Biden administration’s response to Helene, echoing complaints from some residents who said they could not communicate with FEMA aid workers.

When asked if his criticism of FEMA had been helpful, Trump said he and everyone else had the right to criticize people who aren’t doing the best job possible.

The former president also been accused of spreading disinformation on the administration’s response, such as cleaning crews avoiding so-called Republican-leaning areas. FEMA says it’s not true.
