We’re not terribly surprised to hear that Amazon is shutting down Freevee now that Prime Video has ads. Actually, Amazon had to go out of its way to say it wouldn’t earlier in the year. But it seemed inevitable. Amazon’s free, ad-supported video streaming service is no more. RIP, Freevee.

In a press release, Amazon common following the closure of Freevee, “We have made Prime Video a premier entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive entertainment for Prime members produced by Amazon MGM Studios, movies and licensed series, content from other services as an add-on. subscription, live sports, hit movies and series to rent or buy, FAST channels (free ad-supported streaming TV) and the full range of Amazon Freevee content.

Additionally, the platform noted that despite the closure of Freevee (emphasis on “Free”), most things would remain free for consumers, Freevee or not. Amazon shared: “To provide a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out the Freevee brand. There will be no changes to the content available to Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be available to non-Prime members, including a selection of originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed films and series, and a wide range of content. FAST channel library – all available on Prime Video.

“A vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible to non-Prime members” sounds good in theory. But how long before this aspect also stops, like Freevee before it? We guess we can’t worry about that now. Those who miss Freevee but are not a Prime Video subscriber can find this free content in the “Watch Free” section of Prime Video.
