Tillmann and Medfield men’s soccer advances to D3 quarterfinals

MEDFIELD — Watch Medfield’s Max Tillmann play football, and it’ll be hard to believe he’s a freshman.

Tillmann dominated the midfield in the third-seeded Warriors’ 2-0 win over No. 14 Pembroke in the second round of the Division 3 tournament on Thursday night. Not only did he score the go-ahead goal in the second half, but he won possession on multiple occasions and propelled his team up the field.

“Special kid,” senior captain Charlie Curmi said of Tillmann. “He’s tearing up the (Tri-Valley League). He’s tearing up the playoffs.

The Warriors (14-4-2) will face the winner of No. 6 North Reading and No. 11 Chicopee, who meet Sunday, in the quarterfinals.

Tillmann rose above the crowd to nod home a corner from junior Sebastian Brooke with 17 minutes remaining to give the Warriors the lead, walking away to celebrate in front of the home fans.

“It was right there, great cross from Seb,” Tillmann said. “I didn’t even have to do anything, it was just on my head.”

His hard work continued after the goal, pushing the Warriors up the field and preventing the Titans (13-3-3) from generating chances the other way.

Eight minutes later, the Warriors doubled the lead when Curmi fired a low cross into the penalty area, where he deflected off a Pembroke defender for an own goal.

“Max is phenomenal,” Medfield coach Jason Heim said. “It’s so hard to take the ball away from him. He defends, he’s a central player and he plays every minute of every game. He could probably play another 20, 40, 80 minutes if we needed to.

The Titans hit the woodwork twice – with a Gabe Rushing header slamming off the crossbar in the first half and a late Declan Carey shot hitting the base of the post as the team pushed for a goal.

It’s Medfield’s biggest advance in the statewide tournament format, and it’s the program’s longest stint in the tournament. Curmi touts the team’s longtime rallying cry, #dontsleeponblue, which has endured since the program’s run to the D2 North quarterfinals in 2017.

“I’m so proud of what we were able to do,” Curmi said. “It depends on the trust we have in each other. They are all my brothers. Sky is the limit for this team.
