In a recent interaction, Rohit Shetty shed light on how social media trolling has affected his writing decisions and how he may not be able to make Shreyas Talpade’s Laxman stutter again in a film of Golmaal, as some might see it as an insensitive portrayal. Interestingly, the filmmaker’s latest film, Singham Again, is a modern retelling of the Ramayan, and this time too, he wanted to not hurt the audience’s sentiment by intertwining his detective universe with the sacred epic.

Now, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Rohit reveals that he was very worried about a possible backlash from the public. “We were worried throughout filming. The all-star cast and action were on one side. But what we were alert and aware of was not going wrong because we are all emotionally connected to the Ramayan. Not hurting anyone’s feelings was the biggest task for us. I was not worried about the box office performance of Singham Again, but whether there would be any objections to the Ramayan portion in the film,” he tells us.

Incorporating elements from the Ramayan was “a risk factor,” acknowledges Rohit. Speaking about it, he says, “But we were also aware that it was a unique concept and that’s why we jumped into it straight away. That said, we were afraid to think: what if we got the Ramayan wrong? If they didn’t like it, there would be a massive revolt and backlash that could have significantly damaged our film. But our intentions were good. As filmmakers, our intentions are always good and we don’t want to consciously hurt anyone. Fortunately, this worked in our favor. »

While he is “happy” to realize that they “didn’t go wrong” with the narration, he admits that his apprehension was also the reason why he chose not to experiment with Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character. “If you see, there are no songs in the film. There are only cross-country tracks. We always wanted to keep in mind that Kareena’s character is a reflection of Sita Ma. For her to do action or have songs in the film would have been very risky. Kareena is the most important character in the film,” he shares.

Rohit confesses that this was the same reason why, despite the presence of the beloved couple of Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in Singham Again, he could not bring them together the way he wanted. “Even for Ranveer’s character, he doesn’t have any conversation with Deepika’s character. We did all this so that no one would be hurt for even a second. Otherwise, we would have loved to get them together and do a scene where they’re joking around,” he says.

The Simmba and Sooryavanshi director adds, “Since Ranveer was a reflection of Hanuman ji’s character, it could have gone wrong. There is also some banter between Ranveer and Akshay (Kumar) and we could have done something similar with Ranveer and Deepika too. But we made this decision knowingly. We knew in our heads what we could do, what we could show and what we could say. »
