Currently, Ola’s electric scooters use a fixed battery configuration. This means that the swappable battery will debut with the next electric delivery vehicle.

Ola Electric CMD Bhavish Aggarwal announced the company’s upcoming removable battery technology. Along with the swappable battery technology, Aggarwal also teased the delivery of an electric two-wheeler.

On social media platform ‘X’, Aggarwal posted pictures of these upcoming products. He said: ā€œIā€™m working on something very exciting! Ola Electric had previously filed a design patent for a removable battery for use in electric vehicles. The design patent reveals a cylindrical structure with a grab handle at the top, similar to what we’ve seen on other replaceable batteries so far. The recent image presented by the CMD looks like a patent for a single design.

Currently, Ola’s electric scooters use a fixed battery configuration. This means that the swappable battery will debut with the next electric delivery vehicle. Meanwhile, the company also showcased its upcoming electric three-wheelers at its ‘Sankalp 2024’ event, which can also use this battery technology.

Swappable Battery Technology in India

Replaceable batteries are widely used for commercial purposes, except batteries owned by Hero. Vidawhich is one of the rare electric two-wheeler players to use exchangeable battery technology. Bounce also uses replaceable batteries on its electric scooters. However, the largest base of utilities is for commercial applications.

Yuma Energy uses them for its last mile electric two-wheelers, while Honda has also developed its own set of replaceable batteries used on electric three-wheelers in some parts of the country. Interestingly, the Honda Activa Electricwhich will be the company’s first electric two-wheeler in India, will also benefit from swappable battery technology.

Removable batteries are much more practical than fixed batteries. With stationary batteries, the user must find a charging station or outlet to use the portable charger. On the other hand, replaceable or removable batteries can be simply removed from the electric vehicle and charged at home or in the office. Swapping a battery at charging stations is more convenient as it allows the user to swap a depleted battery for a charged one, usually within a few minutes, saving time.
