Tush Push Failed to Work Against Jaguars, But Eagles Remain Confident

Jason Kelce once said that the Tush Push – the Eagles’ interpretation of the quarterback sneak – worked 92 percent of the time, every time (or so). Then there is the remaining 8 percent.

The Eagles seemingly ran into a Tush Push buzz against the Jacksonville Jaguars, whose defense stuffed both of their traditional play-action attempts on two-point conversions Sunday night. Those missed tries in the second and third quarters ultimately influenced the Eagles’ approach to short-yardage situations later in the game. On fourth and one at the end of the third quarter, Jalen hurts dropped back to attempt a pass (which he ultimately rejected) instead of increasing their faithful play.

“They did a good job,” coach Nick Sirianni said after the match. “Every time you have enough, you think twice and try to take a different path. You know, they got us. They did a good job. We’re going to have to do a better job as coaches to help them be successful.

So what went wrong? At least in part, it looked like the Jaguars had a strong counterattack against the organized mass of the Eagles. The defensive line seemed to overexploit the offensive front, limiting the Eagles’ ability to generate forward movement. The Jaguars defense even formed its own counter corner, as the linebackers each pushed a defensive tackle into the line of scrimmage at the time of the snap.

But Cam Jurgens He was reluctant to credit the Jaguars’ defense for its ability to stop the play. Instead, the starting center placed the blame on the offense’s execution.

“We need to make sure that everything is better, that everything is better coordinated on everyone’s part and that everyone moves forward together,” Jurgens said Thursday. “I don’t think the coordination was that good last week. Making sure everyone is doing their job. It’s a difficult game to play. Everybody’s loading the box and it gets tough, but we’ve got to be able to do it, especially when you’re on the goal line.

It can be difficult to achieve this coordination. Jurgens explained that the Eagles don’t play the full-speed game between offense and defense given its high-contact nature. Instead, the offensive line breaks it down on an individual level, as each player practices getting into the correct position and executing the move.

Additionally, there have been some moving parts on the offensive line recently. Over the past three weeks, the Eagles have been missing the 6-foot-8, 365-pound Jordan Mailatawhose push at left tackle often opened the way through the first down marker or goal line for Hurts. Fred Johnson assumed the starting role at left tackle in his absence, but he was only on the field for the first of the Eagles’ two tush push attempts.

The second attempt came immediately after Johnson injured his knee while blocking Hurts on his 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Jack Driscoll came off the bench for the unsuccessful second try on the two-point conversion, a task Jurgens called “difficult” for anyone with cold legs.

“It’s not like it’s an (incredibly) pattern-oriented piece,” Jurgens said. “It’s us moving and pushing and I think Jordan Mailata is an incredible football player to lead that. Honestly, I do everything. He’s a great football player. But especially this game in general, he’s gifted to direct it.

Although both actual Tush Push attempts failed, the Eagles were able to execute a variation of it early in the third quarter on third-and-1. The play appeared to be similar to the one they attempted to run in the first quarter on fourth-and-1, but Jack Stoll incurred a false start penalty, which pushed the Eagles back 5 yards and forced them to punt .

On the third quarter fake sneak, the Eagles lined up for a traditional Tush Push with DeVonta SmithGrant Calcaterra and Kenneth Gainwell positioned in the backfield behind Hurts. Smith moved outside to the right, taking a defender with him, while Hurts ran left behind a trio of blockers in Calcaterra, Gainwell and Stoll and picked up the required yardage.

Even though the Eagles had a 0% success rate in the traditional variation of the game in their win over the Jaguars, it was still a weapon for most of the season. According to Sports Info Solutions, Hurts has made 22 quarterback attempts this season, picking up a first down or scoring on 18 of those attempts for an 82% success rate. He’s up to six Tush Push touchdowns.

So despite their struggles executing it last week, the Eagles won’t be taking it out of the playbook anytime soon.

“I always have so much confidence in the guys in this game and everything else in general,” Jurgens said. “Everything will be fine for us. At the end of the day we want to win the football game and we did that. So we just have to make sure we clean things up throughout the game.
