Lady A Singer Charles Kelley Opens Up About Sobriety in New Docuseries

In the Friday, November 15 episode of the Hulu documentary series, It’s the whole country, Kelley, 43, opened up about quitting alcohol after began to impact his marriage to his wife Cassie McConnell Kelley, as well as his work.

“Success is a double-edged sword, that’s for sure. You know, once you know what it feels like and once you go for it, it’s a drug in itself,” Kelley said in the series. “There’s a lot of doubt that can arise and it’s just a lot of, I think, keeping your ego in check. I had to come back from treatment.”

According to Kelley, Lady A had postponed their Request Line Tour of a full year to be able to go to a rehabilitation center in Utah.

“We were kind of talking to our team about, you know, ‘What do we say? Why are we canceling the tour?’ ” he recalled, before specifying that he and his bandmates Hillary Scott And David Haywood wanted to be “more honest” about the current situation.

“Dave and Hillary have been very good friends throughout this journey,” he said. “And thank goodness I felt like I was getting a second lease on my career and my marriage.”

THE previously revealed country singer that McConnell Kelley, 41, with whom he shares a sonhad planned to meet with a divorce lawyer before her stay in rehab.

“When he was in rehab and I went there for family week, one of the first messages you get is, ‘You’re going to have to do this much work here.’ And I remember being so angry,” Kelley’s wife said during an appearance on CBS Mornings. “Like, you did that. And now I have to do all this work too? But… it affects every single person in this family system. So I could have chosen not to do the work, but then I have to live with the way I was affected and not healed So whether Charles and I were married or not, whether I saw him for the rest of my life, I still had to deal with what I had experienced.

Lady A shared a statement on Instagram in August 2022 when they first announced the postponement of their tour.

“Being on the road with our fans is our greatest joy, so this was a difficult but important decision to make,” the band wrote. “We are a group, but more importantly…we are a family. We are proud to say that Charles has embarked on a journey to sobriety.”

Also during his appearance on It’s the whole country, Kelley said getting sober was “the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.”

“It wasn’t my intention to share my story so much. I just think it’s such a common occurrence and we all struggle with it. The stage of my career I’m at and the stage of my life that I’m in, I want to be able to give something back, in a positive way, even if it’s just a little encouragement,” he said.
