Coronation Street star Julia Goulding addressed her legendary co-star Helen Worth’s exit as Gail Rodwell, admitting it would be “heartbreaking” without her.

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Helen would be leaving the cobbles after 50 years, with her final scenes expected to air soon.

As Gail puts her house on the marketJulia explained that her character Shona “try to stay positive” about the possibility of making a new start.

“Shona is a beacon of positivity in this difficult time, she is trying to stay positive for the kids and for David who is really depressed,” she said.

When asked if she was really being positive or trying to keep the family together, Julia said: “I think she believes what she says, but it’s probably a little bit of both to be honest .

“They’re embarking on a new adventure, they don’t know where they’re going to live, but Shona is doing a lot to try to stabilize their future while David spirals further. She’s arranging to look at apartments and houses, remaining positive as always.”

As for how the Platts will cope without Gail, Julia explained that things won’t go “very well” in the immediate future.

“The Platts are such a strong family. It’s heartbreaking to lose our matriarch,” she noted.

“But they are strong enough to get through this together. It’s a new chapter and uncertain times for the Platts, but Gail has cemented such a good foundation for the family that they can only survive it.”

Speaking previously about her departure, Helen said: “This year seemed like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”
