Latham tips his hat to the Black Caps for their special series victory in India

New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said he was extremely proud of his team after the Black Caps secured their first series victory in India by winning the second Test on Saturday.

After a disappointing 2–0 loss to Sri Lanka, after which Tim Southee resigned as captain, New Zealand were by far the superior team and handed India their first home series defeat in 12 years.

“It’s a moment of immense pride for this group. After a series in Sri Lanka where we didn’t get the results we wanted, to come here and play the style of cricket that we did… immensely proud,” Latham said.

“To be able to win two Test matches here; many New Zealand teams have come here over the last 69 years. To be the first team to win a series here is special and I’m very proud of this group.”.

After stunning India with pace in the eight-wicket win in Bengaluru, New Zealand tormented them with spin in Pune as Mitchell Santner claimed a 13-wicket haul to help script a 113-run win .

“We came here and played a style where I guess we took a little shot at India and we were on the right side of a few tosses as well. That was really important,” Latham told the journalists.

“We came here and we wanted to compete. We wanted to shoot first. I certainly think we did that, with the ball in the first game but also with the bat here.

“Being able to get the first innings on the board was very important and then the bowlers got to work over the last couple of days, which is very pleasing to see.”

Latham said New Zealand would be eyeing a clear victory in Mumbai, where the series finale begins on Friday.

“We will definitely celebrate, but once we head to Mumbai, our focus will be on this match.”
