Kylian Mbappe’s poor form resulted in a rather forgettable El Clasico debut for the French star.

Among the many reasons why Sunday’s Clasico was highly anticipated was the fact that it would be Real Madrid Galactico Kylian Mbappe’s final match against Barcelona. Additionally, the match took place at Madrid’s newly renovated Santiago Bernabeu ground. However, the match ended up being one that Mbappe would like to quickly forget.

Not only Barcelona beat Real Madrid 4-0the Frenchman himself had an unforgettable outing. Mbappe failed to score and was caught offside eight times, which Opta says is the most of any player in a match in Europe’s top five leagues. Furthermore, the previous record was also held by a former Real Madrid and France player, Karim Benzema, who was caught offside during a match against Eibar in November 2018.

Madrid dominated possession early but wasted several chances. Mbappe, who has struggled to match his high standards since joining the Spanish giants, missed four clear openings from close range. He had scored twice but both goals were ruled out for offside.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Mbappe needed to be more precise in the final third. “We knew they were playing with a high line, and we just couldn’t take advantage of it,” Ancelotti said. “Sometimes (Mbappe) fell offside, but he had three or four chances to score and needed a better finishing touch.”

With Barcelona’s regular goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen out for an extended period with a knee injury, questions were being asked about second-choice goalkeeper Inaki Pena who could keep Mbappe out. The 25-year-old ended up accomplishing the task with aplomb and made two saves to deny the Frenchman in addition to preventing the rest of Madrid’s superstar attackers from getting in.

“When they scored those back-to-back goals, it took some energy away from us. It’s a complicated moment for us. It hurts to lose a game and especially after 42 games without a defeat, but we shouldn’t ruin everything because this team will play better,” Ancelotti said.
