A major crash on westbound Sunrise Highway near Oakdale-Bohemia Road completely shut down traffic Saturday evening, causing disruptions on local roadways.

The accident left at least one seriously injured, according to police.

The accident occurred less than 100 feet from an on-ramp and across the street from the Suffolk County Water Authority.

A large police presence was present in the area as authorities investigated the incident.

The highway closure forced drivers to detour onto smaller roads, causing traffic jams and gridlock in nearby neighborhoods.

Local residents have expressed concerns about safety on this busy roadway: “Yeah, it’s happening all the time – all the overdevelopment, the stores – it’s just becoming like the Belt Parkway,” Tom Coffey said.
