Using Iris in Identity Database

Iris data is used to authenticate citizens when fingerprints are altered, making it difficult to verify information.

Iris patterns also exhibit a high degree of variation and uniqueness, making them a reliable identification tool. Once scanned and captured, iris data provides nearly 250 distinctive characteristics for matching, whereas a fingerprint offers only 100 characteristics, according to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Regulation of iris biometric collection will provide the ID card management agency with more information and data to compare, identify, distinguish and ensure accurate issuance of ID cards, especially in cases where biometric information on facial photos and fingerprints has changed or cannot be collected (such as facial changes due to cosmetic surgery, accidents,…).

With this solution, passengers will not need to present their passport or flight tickets after checking in at the counter and checking their bags, helping to speed up the check-in process while providing an experience “contactless” to passengers.

The system will have an authenticated connection with the Ministry of Public Security system. Specifically, when standing near the device, people will have their ID card information verified and will move their eyes closer to the device to verify the information.

If a person is on the list of prohibited entries or exits or is wanted, they will be reported to the authorities. This technology helps speed up security checks, reduce traffic jams and quickly detect cases of citizens banned from flying, prohibited from leaving the country or using false documents to enter or leave the country illegally.

This system combines passport registration information with biometric signs such as faces or fingerprints. If the second photo matches the original, along with confirmation from the database, the door will automatically open so the passenger can board the plane.

For those who have not registered or cannot use the facial and iris recognition service, they can use their fingerprints to complete entry procedures.

However, when checking in at the counter of domestic airlines, passengers will be asked to register their data, including their face and iris, directly at the counter. The collected data will then be transferred to the identity database for comparison, authentication and enrichment.

Foreign tourists can register their facial and iris biometric data upon their first entry and can use this service for subsequent entries and exits, provided they use the passport as registered.

During this time, children under the age of 6 must still use the regular entrance corridor as they are not eligible for face and iris scanning. Indeed, their physical characteristics and associated biometric data are still under development and have not been collected for biometric purposes as prescribed by the Identity Law of 2023.
