Zion Williamson unexpectedly demoted following injury report against Hawks

The New Orleans Pelicans have been aggressively hit by the injury bug this season. Despite the plethora of injuries the team suffered, they managed to get through it thanks to Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson being available.

Unfortunately for the Pelicans, this streak of keeping Zion healthy may soon come to an end.

Zion entered today’s game against the Atlanta Hawks listed as available to play. Less than three hours before tipoff, the Pelicans revealed that Zion had now been downgraded to questionable status due to a right hamstring strain.

Through five games this season, Zion averaged 21.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.2 blocks on 44% shooting from the field. Many had noticed that Zion was in some of the best shape he had been in this offseason, but his shooting saw a decent decline compared to other seasons.

Zion’s health is something that strikes a chord with Pelicans fans. Every season it seems like the team is able to make a strong playoff run, but then a Zion injury seems to happen. Last season, Zion played the most games he has ever played in a season, with 70 games. However, it fell at the very last second during the play-in tournament and the Pelicans did not end up making the playoffs.

Against a team like the Atlanta Hawks, the Pelicans have a chance to survive without Zion Williamson tonight. However, this team is already missing Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy III and CJ McCollum, so no victory will come easy.
