MultivVersus has received a mixed response since its relaunch earlier this year, thanks in part to criticism over its monetization. The latest effort, part of the game’s Halloween event, has particularly irked players because it places a FOMO-like cloud over a selection of very expensive skins.

The Halloween event features a trio of DC skins in civilian clothes, with Superman in a Clark Kent costume, Batman in a Bruce Wayne costume and coat, and Harley Quinn in a Dr. Quinzel outfit. Each of these skins is marked with an “elusive” rarity, meaning they are never expected to be available again after this limited-time event ends in early November.

Each skin is also locked behind a mess of currencies. They can be purchased for six haunted candies each, but you can only get haunted candies by redeeming Spooky Bucks, a free currency you earn by playing during the Halloween event, or Gleamium, the silver currency real game. You can only get six haunted candies with Spooky Bucks and only 12 with Gleamium.

In simpler terms, you can get one skin for free, but you’ll have to exchange real money for the other two – around $30 per skin. You could Also Choose to trade in your Haunted Candy for one of the many non-Elusive skins available during the event, but if you do that, it looks like you’ll have given up your chance at the three main prizes.

FOMO is an integral part of any free game’s item shop, and no one other than the biggest whale will ever try to buy everything, but the transparency of this particular attempt to empty wallets has greatly annoyed players. “FOMO and middle fingers to players at its best”, as a Reddit user puts it on.

“I won’t stand for this since it’s actually crap for F2P players”, another said. “You can only get six candies for free and these outfits have many issues, like not having a cross tag and only giving 960 prestige despite costing more candies than a legendary outfit. Elusive items should be kept for items like ranked skins, not items that can be purchased.
