Contract structure clarified for Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger

Monday marked the deadline for MLB teams to take care of several internal transactions.

Teams had to activate players on the 40-man 60-day injured list and decide whether to extend the qualifying offer to eligible players. Monday was also the deadline for players and clubs to decide whether or not to exercise their options.

The Seattle Mariners had two big options heading into the first week of the offseason. They declined the club’s option for second baseman Jorge Polanco on Friday, and Mitch Haniger exercised his player option on Monday. Haniger’s option decision was surprisingly dramatic, as it wasn’t officially announced until several hours after the 2 p.m. PT deadline.

There has been speculation that Seattle will leave Haniger whether he exercises his option or not, but for now, Haniger remains with the organization.

However, the contract he will be playing under has been a bit difficult to understand. Some media outlets, including us, said the option was for $17.5 million. Other media spoke of $15.5 million. So, after some research, here’s what we learned:

Haniger will be paid $17.5 million this season by Seattle. There’s a base salary of $15.5 million and a signing bonus of $2 million prorated from the deal he signed with the Giants ahead of the 2023 season.

Haniger is coming off a season in which he hit .208 with just 12 homers. The Mariners went 85-77 and missed the playoffs by one game.
