Harris plans to speak to Howard as GOP asks him to concede

Vice President Harris will speak at Howard University Wednesday afternoon amid calls for her to concede to President-elect Trump after the Republican won the 2024 election and is poised to make an extraordinary return at the White House.

The vice president will deliver a speech at Howard, her alma mater in Washington, D.C., at 4 p.m., in her first public appearance since Trump’s victory.

Republicans called on Harris to concede, including former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R), who congratulated Trump and said conceding was necessary for the country’s unity.

“Now it is time for the American people to come together, pray for our country and begin the process of peaceful transition,” Haley said. said on the social platform. “It starts with Kamala Harris’ concession. We can’t just talk about unity in a campaign, we have to show it whatever the result.”

Harris will also call Trump on Wednesday, NBC News reported.

Harris was scheduled to attend her election night party at Howard and speak to supporters, but she did not leave the Naval Observatory. While the results were in Trump’s favor, Harris reporters learned around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday that Harris would not be leaving her residence.

Cedric Richmond, Harris campaign co-chair told his supporters to Howard that the vice president would not address them while the campaign awaited additional election results. Since then, his campaign accounts on social media have remained silent.

Harris’ absence from her own campaign party is reminiscent of the 2016 election in which then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton chose not to speak at her victory party at the Javits Center in New York after it became clear she was going to be defeated by Trump.
