Local artists talk craft and give advice to newcomers on the ‘world’s biggest studio tour’

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – From the Gallopalooza horses dotting Louisville to the magnificent big feet of Bowling Green, Kentucky is no stranger to art and showcasing local artists.

The first weekend in November, the Kentucky Museum brings together artists in different mediums from across the Commonwealth for the world’s largest studio tour.

“Actually, I work in acrylic, oil and a little watercolor. I’m more of an intuitive painter,” said Margaret Ann King of The Art in Me studio. “As I’ve shared it with people, I’ve had so much positive influence and so many positive things have been said about it, I just want to share it more.”

In addition to selling their handmade products, the artists were able to explain how they got into their craft and why they do what they do.

“A useful object, an everyday object, that interests me a lot. Something that someone will pick up and use every day, but also be an individually crafted item like that. So that’s kind of (what’s) behind it, kind of the reasoning,” said Paul Muth from Sugar Grove pottery.

With all artists having a connection to the Commonwealth, whether born here or raised here, there was an emphasis on supporting local artists and bringing Kentucky pride.

“It’s such a beautiful state, such a friendly state, and I just moved two people from California,” King said. “A lot of people move here and love Bowling Green.”

Many artists have given the same advice to newcomers trying to break into the art business; don’t give up and make sure you know your stuff.

“If you can’t work with clay, you can work on how it’s made, you can work on how it’s sold. Knowing how to do business is as important as the clay part,” Muth said. “There are a lot of things that a young person can work on and then find their way back to the medium in which they are playing. »
