What to do to reduce the risk of accidents caused by animals in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The Colorado Department of Justice said last November was the worst month of the year for animal-related accidents.

CDOT said the two most important things a driver can do to avoid accidents caused by wildlife are to obey the speed limit and use beans raised in rural or open areas.

CDOT offered some advice for drivers heading out in November to encounter animals on the road:

  • Slow down if you see animals nearby and always obey the speed limit.
  • Stay alert and reduce distractions.
  • Watch out for “deer crossings” and other animal signs.
  • Brake in a straight line, if you have time and no one is following you.
  • When you see wildlife on or near the road, warn motorists behind you by honking your horn and slamming on the brakes.
  • Don’t stray. If a collision with an animal is unavoidable, maintain control of your vehicle and drive through it before stopping when it is safe to do so.
  • Use high beams. By turning your high beams on wildlife, the animal can run away.
  • Be aware of peak season. Animal accidents most often occur during the hunting and breeding season, which runs from October to December.
  • Watch for animals on the road between dusk and dawn.
  • Watch the herds. If you see a deer or elk, there are likely others nearby.

“The worst choice you can make is to move out of your lane or brake suddenly with vehicles behind you,” said Maj. David Rollins, commander of Colorado State Patrol District 4. “People can get into serious accidents when they let their emotions take over to save Bambi or his friends.”
