Simpson’s brother, Barton, said in a statement to KSAT on Thursday: “It’s heartbreaking, but it brings some peace to our family to know that authorities have gathered enough evidence to be able to confidently pursue charges .”

“It also helps us come to terms with the fact that Suzanne is no longer with us, allowing us to begin a difficult grieving process and focus on rebuilding our lives, especially for the sake of the children and our extended family. We remain grateful to all law enforcement involved for their professionalism in handling this situation,” Barton added, according to the outlet.

The charges come nearly a month after Olmos Park Police Chief Fidel Villegas said during an Oct. 9 news conference broadcast by KENS that Simpson was arrested after failing to show up for a meeting with police. PEOPLE previously reported that he was arrested and charged with assault and domestic violence.

Villegas said at the time that after learning of Suzanne’s disappearance, police were informed of an altercation at the family home that may have turned physical before she was reported missing.

According to Villegas, Simpson and Suzanne had been married for approximately 22 years. NBC News reported her as a mother of four children.

PEOPLE also reached out to the Olmos Police Department for additional information, but did not immediately receive a response. It is not immediately clear whether Simson has pleaded guilty.
