Deadly Tanjung Priok inferno highlights fire risk in crowded Jakarta – Jakarta

The recent deadly fire in North Jakarta’s densely populated Tanjung Priok neighborhood has once again highlighted how the city’s growing population and poor urban planning increase the risk of such fires.

A family of four was killed and at least 15 others were injured in a fire that broke out on Jl. Papanggo 3B in Tanjung Priok around 1:30 a.m. on Friday.

Isnawa Adji, director of the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), said the fire was started by a short circuit in a house and quickly spread to nearby buildings.

A total of 13 fire engines and around 70 firefighters were deployed to put out the fire, which they managed to do two hours after their arrival.

Two buildings were completely destroyed in the fire and losses are estimated at around 900 million rupees ($57,658).

The fire came just weeks after another fire broke out in a densely populated area of Tambora, west Jakarta, killing five people and burning down 30 homes.
