Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand A Republican Party newcomer withstood a challenge to win election to the U.S. Senate for a third time, according to an AP projection.

Gillibrand, the junior senator from New York, was declared the winner shortly after polls closed at 9 p.m., receiving nearly 67% of the vote.

His opponent, a retired New York police detective Mike Sapraiconewas attempting to become the first Republican elected to statewide office since George Pataki was re-elected governor in 2002. Sapraicone had 32.7% of the vote with 37% of the votes counted.

Gillibrand released a statement minutes after the victory: “This victory clearly shows that New Yorkers believe in a government that works and that we must put people before politics. I’m committed to finding common sense solutions, which is why I’m always looking for common ground, from providing health benefits to first responders and veterans to taking guns away off the streets or reduce costs for New York families. New Yorkers believe in basic truths, like caring about your neighbors and treating others with kindness, decency and respect. This has been and will continue to be the hallmark of my public service. »

Gillibrand represented an upstate district in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2009 before being appointed to fill the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton’s departure to become U.S. secretary of state.

She went on to win two six-year terms by wide margins, including a 34-point victory in 2018.

During Gillibrand’s tenure, she was a strong advocate for 9/11 first responders whose long-term health was compromised by exposure to airborne toxins.

Sapraicone, a political newcomer from Long Island, runs his own private security company. He retired from the NYPD in 2000 after 20 years.

He pushed for the repeal of the 2019 bail reform legislation and wants to strengthen border security to prevent illegal migrants and fentanyl traffickers from entering the country.
