WPTV receives 911 calls from Indian River Co. where tornadoes hit Milton

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — WPTV received ten 911 calls from the Indian River Sheriff’s Office the night three tornadoes touched down during Hurricane Milton.

Dirce De Jesus, an Indian River County home health provider, was one of those people who called when high winds from an EF3 tornado brought down a tree at her client’s Vero Beach home .

“Every time I think about it,” De Jesus said, “what I saw from the tornado, it’s like a picture and I just try to erase it.”

Many calls describe the aftermath of tornadoes. Someone can be heard saying: “We cut power lines, trees on houses. I will list them if I can?

Some describe the roofs of their houses being blown off.

One of the callers was grateful to finally get through to the dispatcher and said: None of our phones worked, this is the first time I’ve been able to talk to anyone.

De Jesus said it’s hard to forget that night, but fortunately, she and her client are OK.

“It takes a while to disappear, because it’s so fresh,” De Jesus said.
