‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ had already faced controversy earlier as Dhanush was reportedly upset with Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan’s budding romance during the sets of the film. In an exclusive interview with ETimes, trade analyst Ramesh Bala said, “Towards the end of the shoot, he (Dhanush) did not provide the necessary finances to complete the film. Nayanthara spent her own money to complete the film for the love of her life, Vignesh Shivan. He also revealed to us that the film’s budget exceeded the budget.

Later, at an award function, Nayanthara publicly taunted Dhanush by saying that ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ producer absolutely “hated” his performance in the film and she sarcastically said that she would try to improve in his next films. Dhanush, who was present at the event, can be seen visibly hiding his emotions.
Fast forward to the present, ‘Njanum Rowdy Dhaan’ has made headlines again as Nayanthara wanted to use the behind-the-scenes moments of the film in the documentary ‘Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale’. Dhanush refused to give an AC on this.
As Dhanush did not grant NOC, the makers of the documentary had to change the title and later used footage from the sets which was shot on Nayanthara’s mobile phone. Dhanush later filed a lawsuit over the use of a three-second clip in the documentary, demanding Rs 10 crore.
Nayanthara expressed her anger on social media by writing an open letter which read: “Dear Mr. Dhanush K Raja, S/o Kasthoori Raja, B/o Selvaraghavan, this is an open letter addressed to you in order to correct several errors . A well established actor like you, with the support and blessings of your father and brother, an ace director, needs to read and understand this. Cinema, as we all know, is a fight for survival for people like me: a self-taught person with no ties to the industry and someone who had to struggle to get to the position I hold today. I owe it to my work ethic which is no secret to anyone who knows me but, more importantly, to the goodwill of the audience and my film fraternity. The liberation of my Netflix Documentary was highly anticipated not only by me, but also by many of my fans and well-wishers. It took a whole team of collaborators and friends of the cinema to bring the project to fruition despite all the difficulties that presented themselves to us.
She added: “The vengeance you harbor against the film, my partner and I, affects not only us, but also the people who devoted their efforts and time to this project. This NetFlix documentary about me, my life, my love and my marriage includes clips from many well-wishers in my industry who have graciously contributed and memorabilia from several films, but unfortunately does not include the most special and important film, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. After two long years of fighting with you for a NOC (No Objection Certificate) and waiting for your approval for the release of our NetFlix documentary, we finally decided to abandon, re-edit and settle for the current version since you refused to allow it. the use of songs or visual cuts of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, even the photographs to say the least despite multiple requests.
Nayanthara further wrote that the songs of ‘Naanum Rowdy Dhaan’ were liked by the audience because of their emotional lyrics and they used the same in the documentary as they were aware that no other music would be suitable.
Nayanthara ended the note by saying, “I also suggest you watch it and maybe it might change your mind. It’s important to #SpreadLove and I hope and pray that one day you will also be fully capable of doing it and not just saying it.
