New York to introduce congestion tax in January, while Trump opposes it

New York will start charging drivers to enter midtown Manhattan next year. The plan aims to reduce traffic congestion and has drawn opposition from President-elect Donald Trump.

State Governor Kathy Hochul told reporters on Thursday that the congestion charging program would start on January 5 of next year.

Hochul said the daytime rate for passenger vehicles is $9, although a $15 toll was presented in the original plan.

The program was originally scheduled to start in June but was delayed due to rising costs of living and other factors.

The governor said a 10 percent reduction in the number of vehicles entering the core of Manhattan could be expected under the plan.

She said revenue from the fare program will be used, among other things, to expand bus service.

US media have speculated that the New York state government wants to complete procedures to obtain federal approval before Trump takes office on January 20.

Trump criticized the congestion pricing plan Thursday, saying it puts New York City at a disadvantage compared to competing cities and states and will cause businesses to flee.
