The PS5 Pro can now give your PS4 games a visual boost

THE PS5 Pro is an interesting refresh of the console: it doesn’t offer exclusive games, comes without a disc drive or media, and costs $699. In reality, besides a slightly adjusted design and quieter fans, it’s all about the graphics improvements. And, as it happens, it looks like these upgrades extend to not only PS5 games, but PS4 titles as well.

To be clear, the PS5 Pro doesn’t automatically improve the quality of every game in your library. For PS5 games, developers must update titles so that they are “enhanced” for the new console. Monday, Sony shared a list of 55 of these gamesincluding God of War Ragnarök and The Last of Us Part II remasteredwhich, when played on a PS5 Pro, can take advantage of the new GPU to run games at a higher resolution and increased frame rates.

It is in these titles that the experience announced by Sony shines. Players can expect faster ray tracing effects (so lighting should be more realistic), AI scaling to increase visuals without overtaxing the hardware, as well as ‘more choice in “game modes”: when playing on a base PS5, many games offer the option to play in Performance mode, which reduces graphics quality to increase frame rate, or in Fidelity mode , which reduces the frame rate while improving graphics. The PS5 Pro enhanced games will offer more choice here, with the ability to play in 4K resolution at 60fps.

PS4 games aren’t ‘enhanced,’ but you can make them better

On the other hand, there are PS4 games. These titles will not benefit from enhanced versions, as they are PS4 games and not PS5. As such, you shouldn’t buy a PS5 Pro assuming that the more powerful console will automatically make your PS4 library look as good as the upgraded PS5 games.

That said, the Pro do offer the choice of boosting the visuals on PS4 titles, via a new option in the settings menu. If you enable “Improve picture quality for PS4 games”, you can give your older PlayStation games a little visual boost. (The use of “enhance” is a bit confusing here. The difference is that PS5 enhanced games are changes made by game developers to optimize their games for the PS5 Pro, while PS4 games benefit from a setting hardware on the console itself.)

Again, since this is a simple setting and not a developer-optimized refresh, PS4 games won’t look much better on a PS5 Pro than on a PS5 or PS4 Pro. In fact, this setting won’t improve game frame rates, meaning if a game is limited to 30fps, running with the PS4 frame boost setting won’t change anything.

However, you will notice some improvement in the visuals themselves. The best example (at least, the most popular, by far) East Transmitted by blood: Sony has never offered a remastered version of this fan-favorite PS4 title, so since its launch in 2015, you’ve been forced to play it at 1080p 30fps, regardless of which PlayStation console you ran it on. With this feature, the frame rate is still stuck at 30fps, but the visual improvements officially make it the best way to experience. Transmitted by blood on PlayStation.

Sony doesn’t offer many details on how it handles this visual upscaling (there may be some AI processing going on here). However, the company warns on the setting itself that this mode could cause unexpected behavior in games. If you experience such behavior, Sony recommends that you disable this feature.
