Longhorns’ talent level in victory over Florida Hog problem

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — If Arkansas coach Sam Pittman watched Texas demolish Florida on Saturday afternoon, he might not sleep for a few days. There is a reason for this. He knows the final score of 49-17 wasn’t really that close.

Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers threw five touchdowns to the Gators secondary… in three quarters. He gave way to Arch Manning or it could be even worse. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian pulled his quarterback once the game was decided or he could have added a few more.

Razorback fans need no comparison. Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart did the same thing to the Hogs last week. Since everything Travis Williams tried with his team last week worked, one has to wonder exactly what they can do next Saturday.

The Rebels beat Arkansas with wide receivers. The Longhorns have a few running backs that are going to be a handful. They can run the ball, but look just as dangerous out of the backfield catching passes. This gets them into the open field and that’s where the talent advantage they had over the Gators really became evident.

Many people expect the same lack of interest that Texas has seen over the past 30 years when both teams have played. While these marches are big deals for Arkansas fans, the Longhorns faithful shrug their shoulders and look to the future. They don’t think about the Hogs until game week. Some Hog fans worry about it all year long.

Now, No. 5 Texas will come to town to better position itself for the College Football Playoff. The Razorbacks are just trying to claw their way to a bowl trip somewhere other than Birmingam or Memphis. Both teams need a win to do that.

It will be important to know what Williams can do with the defense recovering from the Rebels’ beating. If it happens again this week, the yelling around Pittman will increase in intensity and volume. It’s a question of depth and the Longhorms have reinforcements that would start for the Hogs.

Strange things have happened in this series between these two teams. Arkansas has already knocked Texas off the top of the rankings. There wasn’t as big a talent gap as it appears this year. But that’s still a week away.

But right now, the Longhorns are playing like a team demanding more than we’ve seen from the Hogs this year. Additionally, Sargsyan won’t be particularly willing to do anything to keep the score low.

While Razorback fans will want to convince themselves there is a chance. Beyond all hope, it is difficult to see what this could be.
