NCT DREAM Talks Album ‘DREAMSCAPE’, Its Concept and Artistic Growth

For NCT DREAMthe concept of dreams and a sense of youthful optimism have been woven into the septet’s fabric since their 2016 debut.

“The word ‘dream’ has grown on us, and I think it has grown on our fans so much that we put it in everything we can. The albums, the name of our concert is ‘The Dream Show’ and even in our songs,” says Mark, 25, the band’s frontman. “It’s become part of our identity.”

Last March, NCT DREAM released “DREAM()LANDSCAPE“, which explored the dark themes that can arise when contemplating reality versus fantasy.

“In ‘DREAM()SCAPE,’ he talks about all the negative emotions that we feel as people,” Mark told USA TODAY. “As NCT DREAM, we have always been very bright. We have always expressed all our positivity. But even with dreams, there are also bad dreams.”

The EP – which reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart and topped the Korean Circle album chart – shed light on the growing pains of life. But NCT DREAM’s latest foray “DREAM LANDSCAPE“, available now, puts the group back on an optimistic path.

“After ‘DREAM()SCAPE’, we have now entered ‘DREAMSCAPE’, and now everything is just heaven, heaven,” says Mark.

Enter the “DREAMSCAPE”

“DREAMSCAPE” follows the U.S. leg of NCT’s third DREAM World Tour, The Dream Show 3: Dream()scape, which concluded in late September.

During these seven stops across the United States, member Renjun, 24, was absent as he was taking a break for health reasons. “DREAMSCAPE” marks his return.

The 11-track album is NCT DREAM’s fourth full-length album.

“It’s kind of like the follow-up to the ‘DREAM()SCAPE’ album, but now we’re bringing in all those negative emotions and really erasing them,” says Mark. “Heaven is just a different realization; it’s not a place that’s far away, but it’s actually very close. Through ‘DREAMSCAPE’, it ultimately brings all of our listeners back to our original positive color.”

The lyrics convey the complexities of love, dreams and overcoming fear.

The members have become more involved in the creative process of their music over the years. This time, Mark and Haechan wrote several songs.

“As we grow and become more mature, I think what we think is different and what we feel is different. It’s not like we’re trying to convey our growth in our new music, but I think that “It’s important to create and show what we can do best as adults,” says Haechan, 24.

The importance of connection

Sonically, “DREAMSCAPE” is NCT DREAM’s signature genre-bending sampling style, influenced by 80s electro-pop, disco, ballad, and synth.

“So far, I think we have tried many genres and musical concepts. Now, I think we need to create more songs that only NCT DREAM can do,” says Jeno, 24.

Another key aspect of “DREAMSCAPE” is how the members use its lyrics to connect with their fans.

“Communication is the most important part,” says Renjun. “Our music also has the power to give courage to people.”

This notion influences NCT DREAM’s growth as artists and individuals.

“A lot of things happened from being with the members, but I think I became more mature as I met the fans. I feel like I learned my life from talking to the fans and by interacting with them in a place where I can meet them,” says Jisung, 22.

NCT DREAM’s vision for the future

NCT DREAM sees “DREAMSCAPE” and this year a chance to grow. This December, they are scheduled to perform on select dates of iHeartRadio’s Jingle Ball Tour, including Los Angeles and New York.

“Personally, I think a lot of things change in 2024. Among them, I think 2024 is the year we can see more positive possibilities in ourselves, so we do our best in every moment,” says Jaemin , 24 years old.

Chenle, 22, echoed Jaemin’s sentiments, adding that the group plans to continue creating music that best reflects them.

“This album, it really has all of our originalities, but in the current version, and I think that’s what gives it a different spin. I think that marks our positioning for 2024, and I’m personally looking forward to having this album. the album becomes the album that really takes us to that next level,” says Mark.
