Four keys to southern football against Bethune-Cookman | South

Check these egos

South coach Terrence Graves sounded the alarm before the sweat was dry after last week’s victory. He told his team that they hadn’t accomplished anything yet, and it was good advice that he repeated throughout the week. The Wildcats are coming off what could be considered a surprise over Grambling and are sniffing out Louisiana teams with growing confidence. The Jaguars have enough veterans in the lineup to avoid finding themselves taking a nap, but it’s human nature to relax after positive results. It’s time to grab the brass ring.

Keep your balance

Quarterback C’Zavian Teasett broke out last week, but he’s still not ready to fully carry the offense. The Jaguars’ running game has developed over the past three weeks behind a revamped offensive line. Pounding opponents between the tackles will give Teasett better coverage to execute his throws and help him stay clean. A strong running game could allow Southern to win a game without battling the opponent in the final minute. The offensive staff also doesn’t want to put Teasett in danger, as an injury would really set the offense back.

Contain and preserve

The Jaguars defense has played fairly consistently but has a penchant for missed tackles and missed interceptions. That could be a big factor this week, because while Bethune-Cookman has struggled, he has several explosive players at the skill positions, including quarterback. Containing them can prevent a short gain from being turned into a big play. South defensive backs need to get their fingers off before the opposition’s passes hit their hands. The No. 1 pass defense threw four interceptions, but gave up three times as many.

Bring on the noise

The South’s schedule is jam-packed with home games, and players have commented on how they’re looking forward to fans and the Human Juke Box supporting them for the first time in three weeks. There is no excuse for a low turnout with the possibility of Southern winning the West Division title and a 2 p.m. game with the crosstown competition taking place in the evening. It’s a moment fans should savor for a team picked to finish fourth in the West. Load up at the tailgate and bring an extra set of vocal chords.
