Region 8 community receives grant to improve wastewater pumps

ST. FRANCIS, Ark. (KAIT) – The city of St. Francis is trying to improve its quality of life. Thanks to a recently received grant, the city can now improve its sewer system.

The city applied for the grant last year, but was denied. The city reapplied this year and was approved.

The $474,000 grant will be used to replace the city’s wastewater pumps.

St. Francis Mayor Teressa Johnson said the current pumps have been around since the 1980s and have become a problem.

“We have two pump stations with alternating pumps in each and they were installed in 1988,” Johnson said. “You have to constantly work on it and there are always problems here and there and if your sewers don’t work, people won’t be very happy.”

The city will sign a grant on Nov. 25 and hopes to complete the wastewater upgrade by spring.
