Connecticut’s undocumented immigrants worried about Trump’s deportation plans – NBC Connecticut

Unidad Latina en Accion in New Haven brought people together to discuss what a second term for President-elect Trump could mean.

“Everyone is dealing with this news, you know, this new administration and, you know, different levels of danger,” said John Lugo, organizing director of Unidad Latina en Accion.

Among the group was an undocumented student.

“It’s just a lot of anxiety and fear about what’s going to happen. What will this fear translate into,” the student said.

She has lived in the United States for four years and is originally from Colombia.

“We came here because the situation there is really difficult. And, you know, that’s when we came here looking for a higher quality opportunity,” she said.

Also among the worried crowd was a woman whose husband is undocumented.

“This is going to be difficult for me because we have been together for 14 years and we are legally married,” the wife said.

They fear he will have to return to Guatemala following last week’s election results and Trump’s plans for mass expulsions.

“Yes, it changed everything. They have a lot of them. He’s very stressed worrying about what’s going to happen next,” she said.

It is estimated that there are more than 100,000 undocumented immigrants in Connecticut and we are told that many of them work in industries like agriculture, construction, landscaping and cleaning.

While some state leaders have promised to step in and help protect them, community members also play a role.

“Because I think it’s important. Because we have to be prepared for what is going to happen,” said Briam Timko, Unidad Latina en Accion volunteer.

We’re told concerns include immigration raids and people being arrested on the streets.

More meetings are planned as they face many unknowns.
