9-1-1’s Oliver Stark Discusses What’s Next for Buck After His Breakup with Tommy, and I Have Mixed Feelings

Spoilers await for season 8, episode 6 of 9-1-1“Confessions”.

9-1-1 Season 8 aired in the middle of the TV schedule 2024and it has been emotional so far. In addition to the opening of the season (which once again putting Athena and Bobby to the test), Buck continues to discover himself after coming out last season. However, her relationship with Tommy hit a rocky patch in the most recent episode, and it led to their breakup. Now Oliver Stark comments on what’s in store for Buck, and I have mixed feelings about it.

In “Confessions”, Buck discovered that Tommy had been engaged to a woman for two years – and not just any woman. This was former dispatcher Abby Clark, who Buck was involved with in season 1. This relationship was so deep that he lived at her house after she left him, and he didn’t get a proper closure until she surprisingly returned in the season 3 finale. After speaking with Maddie and Josh, Buck realized that he truly cared about Tommy despite their awkward mutual relationship and wanted Tommy to move in with him . However, Tommy eventually ended the relationship because he didn’t want to be hurt and because it was new to Buck.

Given what we know Olivier PierreIt’s Buck, he’s going to take the breakup hard, as evidenced by his arrival at Eddie’s at the end of the episode. He didn’t say a word and there was only beer and silence. Stark said Weekly Entertainment how his character will handle the breakup and, even though it seems like it will lead to a positive moment, there is still reason to be cautious:

Buck really goes about channeling his grief into positive hobbies, to an almost obsessive degree, which is noticed by a few people around him and presents some light and fun scenes for the cast. In typical Buck fashion, he’s going to keep moving forward and find a way to deal with it. The cracks will probably start to show, but it is certain that at first the mask and facade will look a lot like an “I’m fine.”

On the one hand, it will be refreshing to see Buck channel his emotions with new hobbies. What I also like is that it will lead to some light moments involving other characters. Fans surely know that we could use a little levity at the start of this season.

Despite this, there are only so many ways to distract yourself until it starts to break down. Sure, Buck has had other relationships, but this was his first with a man. That — combined with the fact that the breakup was so sudden — might explain why he’s going to take it so hard. Even though he’ll have the support of the 118, there’s only so much they can do as well, so there’s a good chance we’re heading toward some sort of breakdown.

Regardless of what happens in future episodes, this could give 9-1-1 the opportunity to further explore Buck’s sexuality. He went straight into a relationship after get out via this great kiss scene. So this could give the character the opportunity to truly understand themselves while navigating the single life. I can’t wait to see the funniest moments that result from his hobbies but, given the other side of Oliver Stark’s comments, I’m definitely going to worry about him hitting rock bottom.

New episodes of 9-1-1 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and is available to stream the next day with a Hulu Subscription.
