Laurel-Jones County Animal Rescue League Warns of Illegal Pet Dumping

LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) – The Laurel-Jones County Animal Rescue League is asking people to stop and think before getting rid of their unwanted pets.

An unidentified man was filmed on a security camera on November 5 throwing four dogs in front of the building.

For the rescue, this represents an additional cost to their already very thin bank account.

“We are funded primarily by donations, so we can’t take multiple dogs at once,” said director Elisha Dykes.

Dykes said animals are dropped off at the rescue several times a year.

Some are abandoned on the next street or even in the dumpster, putting them at risk of being injured or even killed.

“If you do it on a public road, you might hit an animal,” Dykes said. “So you’re causing damage to animals, damage to your vehicle.”

But the cost of dumping doesn’t just hit relief pockets.

If you are caught, you could be charged with animal neglect and have to repay all the money the shelter spends on the animals.

“When we get information about this person dumping, we file charges,” Dykes said. “We need to make it known that dumping is illegal, whether here or elsewhere. »

Dykes added that the rescue already has enough dogs and cats and they are not accepting new animals indefinitely.

“We have a waiting list,” Dykes said.

The simple answer, Dykes believes, is to spay and neuter pets.

“Southern Pines Healthy Pets Clinic always offers inexpensive spays and neuters,” Dykes said. “They always offer help every month. They always have a special, so there’s no excuse for not being able to afford it.
