After David Pastrnak I took a long shot at Linus Ullmark from 38 feet with 4:07 left in the second period, the Bruins didn’t manage another shot until overtime. That included a no-shot power play to end the second period.

“Our lack of execution on the power play wasn’t good enough to generate scoring chances,” Montgomery said. “I don’t know if that fueled the third period and our lack of intensity.”

The Bruins coach didn’t claim to have any answers at hand.

When asked why third periods were a problem – the Bruins also went long stretches without shots in Thursday’s win – Montgomery responded:

“I don’t have an answer.”

How are they going to fix it?

“Talk about it. We will look at what we are doing from a sports science perspective,” he said. “We will find answers. For the moment, I have no answer to give you.

Montgomery said he didn’t think fitness was an issue.

“That’s what we thought during camp,” he said. “We don’t think so anymore.”

He was asked if he wondered if the players were still listening and why the message wasn’t getting through.

No, I don’t question that,” Montgomery said. “It’s up to you to discover and find a reason. We just weren’t good enough. You can write down what you think is the team’s discomfort and what is wrong. We’re just not playing well enough.

Brady Tkachuk, who scored the game-winner in overtime, nearly matched the Bruins shot for shot himself with 12, including five in the third.

It was the first time the Bruins had gone without a shot in the third period since Dec. 21, 2006, when Montgomery was a first-year assistant coach at RPI and Matt Poitras was 2 years old.
