On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined Bay Area radio station KNBR to provide injury updates before the team enters its bye week. Much of the attention has been focused on the star running back Christian McCaffreywho the team hopes will start practicing again next week in preparation for their Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We hope it turns out that way,” Shanahan said. “That tends to be the case, and it’s been going on since we stopped him and went through these very slow stages. It’s getting there. He hasn’t had any setbacks and I hope he gets through a very good week and that we can get in training next week, which would obviously be huge for us.”

The coach provided updates on several other players, starting with linebacker. Dr. Greenlawwho is working toward a comeback from the torn Achilles he suffered in February during the Super Bowl.

“I think Dre is getting close,” Shanahan noted. “I don’t want to put a timetable on it. I’d probably be surprised (if I did) right after the bye week, but I think after that it’ll be almost week to week, which means that if all goes well, it will be a week sooner rather than later, regardless of the diagnosis.”

Likewise, the defensive end Yetur Gross-Matoscurrently on injured reserve due to a knee injury, is expected to follow a week-to-week schedule following his leave.

“I don’t know if Yetur has a chance after the bye week, but I think the same way, if he’s not ready for it, it’ll be week to week after that,” Shanahan said. “And hopefully, at least by Seattle (Week 11); that’s what we’re hoping for.”

Shanahan also believes in safety Talanoa Hufanga could come back and play with a cast, adding: “But we have to see. Asking a player to play with a cast, it can be a very difficult situation for the player. And so we will have to feel how good he is in the cast. comfortable. I was with it to know how it was going to go.

Finally, Shanahan mentioned wide receiver John Jenningswho missed the last two games with a hip injury, will likely be back next week. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave remains a possibility for the playoffs, and defensive tackle Kevin Givenswho did not play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, is also set to return.
