Alabama basketball welcomed back a familiar face Coleman Coliseum Friday.

Despite being stranded for two hours when the team bus broke down on its way to Alabama, Arkansas State unexpectedly traveled to Tuscaloosa to face the Crimson Tide in Game 2 of the 2024-25 season.

Arkansas State coach Bryan Hodgsonwho previously served as an assistant coach alongside Nate Oats at Alabama, played handyman on Thursday. However, the bump in the road cost the team a night of practice.

No. 2 ranked Alabama and Arkansas State are each preseason favorites to win their respective conferences, and the Red Wolves played like that despite an 88-79 loss to the Crimson Tide.

When Hodgson and company visited Coleman Coliseum last December, they returned to Jonesboro with an 89-65 loss.

After a 110-54 victory on Monday, Alabama basketball defeated Arkansas State, 88-79, for its second victory of the year.

Another layup from returning Final Four starter Latrell Wrightsell Jr. sees Alabama basketball just short of a 10-point advantage once again with 3:21 at the buzzer.

ASU’s Rashaud Marshall made it a two-point game with a layup. Joseph Pinion delivered another to tie the scoreboard, 68-68, with 7:08 on the clock.

With a second-chance dunk, Grant Nelson appeared to shake off the rust after suffering an abdominal injury before the start of the season. Alabama took a 58-51 lead over Arkansas State with 13:51 left.

A steal and layup for the freshman stud gave Alabama a 51-46 second-half lead — and the Crimson Tide fans in the stands at Coleman Coliseum rose to their feet.

After taking a 16-point lead at 6:01 of the half, Alabama basketball returned to the locker room with a narrow 43-40 lead against a hungry Arkansas State team.

Following a missed three-pointer by Mark Sears at 2:25 of the half, Alabama was held scoreless by Arkansas State for more than two minutes. A successful three-pointer by ASU’s Josh Hill saw the Red Wolves trail by six with 2:14 left in the half.

Arkansas State chases Alabama’s 28-18 lead by taking advantage of turnovers. ASU’s Derrian Ford scored after a bad pass from Grant Nelson, shaking off injury rust, Taryn Todd scored on a layup following an offensive foul by Jarin Stevenson.

Alabama’s Labaron Philon took a ten-point lead over Arkansas State at 12:28 of the half. The freshman drained a three and went one-for-two from the free throw line, a sequence for the Crimson Tide on Friday.

After Cliff Omoruyi regained the Crimson Tide’s lead from the free throw line at the 17:04 mark until halftime, SEC Preseason Player of the Year Mark Sears outscored Alabama , 8-4, with a layup.

At 18:17 of the half, Arkansas State took a 4-3 lead on a three-pointer from Kobe Julien. Alabama freshman Derrion Reid gave the Red Wolves possession back with a turnover and was replaced by Jarin Stevenson.

Alabama basketball leads Arkansas State, 2-0, with 19:24 left in the half thanks to a second-chance layup from freshman Derrion Reid.

Alabama listed guards Labaron Philon and Mark Sears, forward Jarin Stevenson and Derrion Reid, and center Clifford Omoruyi as starters before Friday’s announcement.
