GOP seeks to maintain supermajority in Kansas Legislature as Democrats attempt to break through

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – 12 News will be monitoring the Kansas Statehouse Tuesday evening, where the vast Republican majority faces challenges from Democrats this election cycle. All 125 seats in the Kansas House and 40 seats in the Senate are up for election.

The GOP is focused on preserving its control, while Democrats aim to gain seats. Republicans currently hold enough seats to override any veto issued by Gov. Laura Kelly.

Democrats have targeted 10 seats they hope to hold and win. They must win two seats in the House and three in the Senate to break the supermajority. Johnson County is where they have the best chance of doing that.

Meanwhile, Republicans are looking to expand their legislative control, with Sedgwick County potentially playing a key role. As of Tuesday, 50 House seats and eight Senate seats have already been assigned, as those races are uncontested.
