Marvin Haynes seeks nearly $2 million in damages in connection with wrongful conviction

Nearly a year after being exonerated after spending nearly 20 years in prison, Marvin Haynes filed a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota, seeking $100,000 for each year of unjust imprisonment.

Haynes, who was convicted of murdering 55-year-old Randy Sherer in 2005, was exonerated in December last year after spending about 20 years in Stillwater prison on charges of first-degree murder and second degree assault. He was 16 years old at the time of his indictment.

In court papers filed Thursday in the Minnesota Supreme Court, Haynes’ lawyers asked the judge to award him $100,000 for each year of wrongful incarceration, plus compensation for “unpaid damages.”

The complaint says Haynes is entitled to compensation for lost wages while incarcerated.

The court filing adds that since his exoneration, Haynes has had to “reintegrate into society almost entirely on his own and start his adult life from scratch.”

Haynes’ attorneys also say Haynes feels the effects of prison trauma on a daily basis and has required neuropsychological testing, psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medical and mental health treatment.
